The Story...

Hello and welcome to Trashlamp

I’m Louise and I live in North West England where I create eco-friendly lighting, jewellery and other gift items.

Throughout my life I have collected waste materials, always thinking what I could create. Filling sketch books with wild ideas, I eventually started attending art school. This lead onto a course in Textile Design and then studying for a degree in 3D Design. I started making lampshades out of anything I could find but soon realized the potential of the plastic that I was throwing away. As the plastic crisis started hitting the news, showing images of ocean pollution, I became more determined to utilize this material in my work.

Studying for a Master’s Degree in Textile Design, I finally developed my style and began creating sculptural lighting. Working out measurements to create geometrical shapes and dying the plastic to produce ambient moods.

Using more and more plastic, I had to start sourcing it elsewhere. Now thanks to family, friends and a small local business I have a steady supply. I also use other materials that are being thrown away, rescuing items destined for a landfill site.

I also create jewellery and other gift items

I have always enjoyed creating earrings and other jewellery items. When I started using upcycled plastic I found it very rewarding and I wanted to share my work with the world. It’s fun to create something so small and delicate after working large scale. I find that each size inspires the other design. Alternating between the dimensions gives me ideas for lots more items to make. I will be adding these to the website in the future.
